A Romance Grows in Brooklyn24. August 2013
A new city. A new love. For Shikhiu, the former led to the latter when a move to New York introduced him to the woman of his dreams, Olivia. Sparks flew when they met at a concert in Central Park, and two years later, a nervous Shikhiu knelt down and proposed in a room filled with rose petals and all of the photos he and Olivia had taken together.
Though Olivia hailed from Hong Kong and Shikhiu grew up in St. Louis, they both agreed that their wedding could only be held in one place—the city in which they fell head over heels in love. So on a brilliant summer day, not unlike the one on which they met, they married at the historic boathouse in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.
Modeled after the 16th-century Library of St. Mark’s in Venice, the Beaux Arts-style building provided an enchanting setting for the celebration. As swans glided by, friends and family gathered on the terrace for the ceremony which included paper fans for guests and charming illustrations of the couple. The reception also mixed elegance and whimsy. Miniature figurines of panda bears, Olivia and Shikhiu’s favorite animal, greeted guests next to hand-calligraphed place cards. A row of French doors along the lake allowed guests to enjoy a breathtaking view of the sunset before they sent the couple off with heart-shaped sparklers.
